HND student Ross Turnbull has just submitted this entry to the ISTD (International Society of Typographic Designers) Student Assessment for 2014. This year ISTD set five briefs, and Ross chose Number 4, 'Protest!' - which challenges the designer to explore the idea of protest via typography. Ross' solution, inspired by Constructivism and Punk, was to create a pocket-sized 'Guide to Safe Protesting', which could be distributed in a range of A-sized double-sided posters and then folded down into a handy pamphlet. As well as sketchbooks and the final artwork, Ross had to submit a detailed annotation of his typesetting and layout strategy:

Where Does Your Money Go?

NC Graphics have just finished their Infographic project, 'She Me The Money', a brief we've used over the last couple of years which is always interesting to see because it's about how 21st century students are dealing with their finances.

The project requires a detailed analysis of weekly spending, and the idea needs to work as an informative or confessional infographic, and along the way we recommend reading David McCandless' superb book 'Information is Beautiful'. Some of the finished solutions have been posted to our Pinterest boards, but here's one very engaging design from Rumana Sayed, who mixed craft and digital channels to come up with a lovely solution.

NC Graphic Design students Charlie Law and Kim Louden took the train through to Glasgow last week with course tutor Alex Gunn to attend the annual Show Racism the Red Card Awards at Hampden Park, where Charlie won in the FE category and Kim was highly commended.

Each year the Red Card Scotland creative competition asks young people to come up with an inventive way of promoting the core messages of anti-racism and anti-sectarianism. This was the 10th awards ceremony to be held at Hampden Park, and over 4,500 young people from schools and colleges across Scotland took part in this year's competition. The judges were Craig Brown (ex Scotland Manager)Denise O’Sullivan and Ella Stephen (Glasgow City FC), Liam Craig (Captain of Hibernian FC),Veronica Rankin (former EIS Equality Officer and Red Card Supported), William McIlvanny (Novelist and Writer Against Racism) and Yvonne Donald from Education Scotland.

Charlie's success means that we've managed to produce a winner in each of the past five years at SRRC, and as well as the prospect of his design work being used across Scotland in 2014/2015, Charlie managed to get his hands on a signed Celtic shirt!

One Week #4 : Cutty Sark

Our fourth 'One Week' project kicks off next week, and today the students were handed out the brief by the client, the blended Scotch Whisky brand Cutty Sark.

This time around we've expanded the format to involve six design agencies who will act as mentors, hosts and creative collaborators - an original and ground-breaking experiment in design education. We've also appointed a design lead within each team, and they'll direct the projects and manage the agency liaison.

Cutty Sark's Global Brand Controller, Jason Craig, gave a detailed presentation in the studio, covering the history, brand development and target markets for the product. He proposed a very open brief - Cutty Sark are looking for fresh ideas to add momentum to their continuing market recovery from a historical low in terms of sales in 2009.  Mentors Charlie Bell and Walter Hamilton (Whitespace), Charlie Boyle (Multiply), and Graham Neish (Neish) also gave up their valuable time today to attend,  alongside Iain Lauder, who originally brought the project to the design team back in late 2013. Jason's presentation included this short promo detailing Cutty Sark's brand philosophy -

Edinburgh College has been shortlisted at the Game Changer Awards, for a project by two of our HND Visual Communication (Graphic Design) students. The Awards recognise student-led projects or initiatives inspired by Glasgow 2014 and its legacy goals, and the aim is to celebrate outstanding contributions in the run-up to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The six different categories of award cover the breadth of contribution that colleges and higher education institutions are able to make to the Games and to sport in Scotland. Edinburgh College was shortlisted in the Student Achievement category for 'DO:25', an initiative developed by graphic design students Hussain Al-Khirsan and Alistair Kerr. The pair created a campaign to motivate children and adults to take part in regular physical activity.

Their resulting App design breaks a day into 25-minute chunks, allowing you to organise around your schedule, making exercise more accessible and manageable. This project was actually set by the Dept. of Health, as the Open Brief at the D&AD New Blood Awards, and on submission it won a Best of Year.

Winners of the gold, silver and bronze awards will be announced at the Game Changer Awards dinner and ceremony on Thursday 3 April 2014. Scottish comedian and broadcaster, Fred MacAulay will be master of ceremonies for the evening, and special guests will include members of the Scottish Parliament, Scottish Government and Glasgow 2014 officials. And of course we will be there.

Experience @ Creative Exchange

Our HND Final Year Interactive Design students have an exhibition of their work showing at Creative Exchange, which will  run for the next three weeks.  An opening event takes place on Friday 7th March, from 6-8PM.

The opening will a chance for participating students, friends, family, tutors and invited design professionals to view 14 examples of digital design work in response to briefs set via the YCN Awards 2014. The course won two commendations last year at YCN, both for Experian, and this year the class have tackled the following briefs :
      Morrisons Supermarket – Design a new in-store experience
      Dominoes Pizza – Reclaim 2-for-Tuesday
      Lawn Tennis Association - Encourage 17-25 yr olds to play tennis

The show is called 'Experience' - reflecting how all of the solutions are concerned with the user experience, including digital interfaces, virtual reality and social media.
