In the Fine Art Studio
10 March 2015
We're big fans of the 'hands on' ethos in the design process, and during the NC (Foundation) year, the students do three related units (Colour, Exploratory Media Handling, Drawing) that focus on exploration, expression and making a bit of a mess.
This week we set up a session in the Fine Art studios, where the class got to spend a whole day drawing with a variety of materials and tools, with some great results.

We Love Collaboration
29 August 2014
It was a busy induction week for all three of our Graphic Design groups. The HND and HNC classes (totalling 40 students) collaborated on a project which included a day-long workshop in screen-printing, led by one of our final-year students, Sarah Diver-Lang, who teaches printmaking and booking binding at Edinburgh Contemporary Crafts.
Sarah Diver-Lang demonstrates screen printing in R310.
With some screen-printing skills under their belts, in teams of four, the students explored a word or phrase and then produced a set of scamps and a bunch of A3 posters showing off their concepts. For many it was their first introduction to a more traditional approach to design execution - and certainly a messier one than we normally see in the studio. We'll put some of the work up from the project on Pinterest later this week.

Our new NC class also got in on the activities by exhibiting a series of 16 A2 moodboards which they'd worked on during the week as part of their 'Colour Me Impressed' project. These samples give a pretty good indication of some great exploration of colour, mood and tone :

Berlinische
1 February 2014
On Friday we visited one of Berlin's newer galleries, Berlinische, where we met up with one of our former graphics students, Viktorija Kravcova, who spent six months at Landor in Hamburg and is now pursuing her design career in Berlin.
The gallery hosts work that includes Constructivisim, Dada, the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) and the Eastern European avant-garde. The art of the divided and reunified city of Berlin is also explored in photography and multimedia. Berlinische has an excellent website too which covers the whole collection.

@ the Great Big Art Show
7 June 2012

The Great Big Art Show is currently running in the Hub at Edinburgh's Telford College and features work from HNDs in Contemporary Art Practice and Illustration, alongside HNC and NC Graphics and Photography, and First Diploma Art through to National and Foundation.
Last night was the Private View event, and our NC Graphics students were pleased to be a part of it all, with their personal project work on display - their first ever exhibited work.
Our award-winning course is one of the most successful of its kind in the UK. Find out about studying with us, or get in touch at hello@welovedesignetc.info
