Visiting Time

10 December 2014

As well as all our project activity, over the past few weeks we've enjoyed a number of visits from industry practitioners and supporters of the course.

Back in November, Michael Heins from Lewis came in and did a talk (which you can read about here), and we also had a visit from Terry Smith, a designer at Peach in Glasgow, who graduated in 2012 and is a recent recruit to our 'Design Buddy' scheme. Terry brought in three years' worth of sketchbooks for our archive and shared some of his thoughts on design with our NC group.

More recently Prof. Keith McIntyre, the Reader in Visual Art and Interdisciplinary Practices at Northumbria University was visiting the Dept and dropped into the studio to see what we were doing. We also had day-long visit from Garry Kane, a designer at Storm Ideas, an offshoot of the award-winning Leith-based digital agency Storm ID, who specialise in viral marketing and experimental social media strategies.

Garry graduated HND Interactive Design in 2010, and prior to Storm Ideas,  was part of the design team at the Union, (coincidentally, alongside Terry Smith) and worked on digital campaigns for some of Scotland's top brands. He presented his portfolio and talked about the relationship between digital design and front-end development, and how he has managed to bridge that gap in his own career.

Also in for a short visit and a spot of lunch was Mike Donoghue, whose experience in marketing and advertising has included stints at Saachti & Saatchi, WWAV Rapp Collins, and most recently, StoryUK.  Mike has been a long-time supporter of the course, but this was the first time he had actually visited the college to see the studio and meet students whilst they worked.

On Wednesday we hosted the first mentoring session of the year, where our new final year design students got the chance to meet their mentors and discuss their new project, a live brief involving a re-brand and web design for a Scottish charity organisation.

We also showed a selection of the 90-second videos our students put together for their motivation projects. Some of these are now available to view on our vimeo space.

One of the mentors who couldn't make the event was Kirsten Murray (a senior designer at Family), who was on holiday in America. But she showed her dedication to the programme by taking some time out to say hello to everyone via Skype from San Fransisco.

An extra guest in attendance was Simon Earp, recently appointed Vice Principal of Corporate Development at the College, who came along to see the mentoring programme in action.

YCN Annual 2011

15 January 2012

Our consignment of the YCN Student Annual 2011 arrived in the studio towards the end of last week. Produced in an edition of 15,000, the Annual is freely distributed across creative education, and to leading creative agencies internationally.

The annual showcases of all the Commended work from 2011, plus the live creative briefs for 2012. This edition features a series of five interviews with former Commended students, looking at their experience and successes in the industry. It also contains sample work from our three Commended students - Abbie Macpherson, Gill McColl and Sarah Crawford. Their complete winning submissions are on show at the YCN website.

Taking The Proverbial Even Further

19 September 2011

It's been a whirlwind summer for HND Graduate Gill McColl. As well as a stint at the Touch Agency, and starting up a successful freelance career, Gill's final project 'Take the Proverbial' has become real commercial success.

History ReTweets Itself

Take the proverbial images

Gill's work - a series of contemporary proverbs in retro-typographical styles - now has its own e-commerce website, and a distribution deal in a number of high profile shops and galleries, where the prints have been selling well.

Take The Proverbial recently made the pages of the Scotsman Supplement, and this week is featured on the influential Computer Arts Magazine's blog, where Rob Carney, the editor of Computer Arts, posted a great review of the work and included some nice quotes from Gill herself.

Drumming Up Some Publicity

18 May 2010

The current print issue of The DRUM Magazine, the design and media industry publication, features an article on this summer's upcoming College Degree Shows across Scotland and the North East.

The piece features work by final year students from the likes of Dundee College of Art, ECA, Glasgow School of Art, Gray's, and Edinburgh Telford, as well as the dates and venues of all the shows. HND 2 work featured from Telford is by Hannah Bloomfield, Duncan McLeod, Artur Pasiek and Amanda Gliddon.

As an added bonus, the online DRUM carries an 'InDepth' piece on Edinburgh Telford's HND Year, which includes samples of all our HND students' work and information on our Industry Night.
