David is First Class

28 February 2012

Our congratulations to former NC student David Gasi, who recently completed his BA (Hons) in Graphic Design with a First Class award from Leeds College of Art.

David's specialisms are type design and publishing, and you can check out his portfolio at www.davidgasi.com. He also curates an excellent typographical resource at typejournal.com.

David is currently based in Rotterdam, where he is a junior designer with Dutch Agency Das Buro.

MPA Roses

23 February 2012

It was a great morning of minor chaos in Studio R310 today as HND1 furiously assembled their entries for MPA Roses. Unlike YCN and D&AD, MPA Roses still require mounted artwork submissions, which is always a lot more fun to prepare than a digital submission.

A big thanks to our Learning Assistant Harry Kirkland who collated and shipped all the entries in good time.

Show Racism the Red Card 2012 - Finalists

20 February 2012

For the third year running we've managed to get nominated to the final shortlist in the FE section of the SQA-sponsored Show Racism the Red Card competition.

This year, HND1 student Danny McMahon and NC student Mark Phillips have both been named as finalists. This is the first time we've submitted work from NC-level students - it's a big boost to the course for one of them to get nominated - well done Mark!

The winning work will be announced live at the ceremony at Hampden Park later this year. Check out Mark's work -

Heinz Salad Cream YCN

8 February 2012

Our NC Graphics groups A & B recently completed their first competition project - a YCN brief to promote Heinz Salad Cream to a younger audience. As part of the brief, we also asked the classes to devise a digital presentation, featuring their research, a series of posters, and either an ambient or digital in situ idea. Here is a short selection from the finished work, showcasing some good copy skills and lots of visual imagination.

Hamburger Bahnhof

1 February 2012

Whilst HND 2 Graphics are out on work placement, their Visual Communications cousins, HND New Media, are currently on a trip to Berlin to the Transmediale Festival of Art & Digital Culture.

Today they stopped off at the Hamburger Bahnhof contemporary art gallery, ostensibly to see the db exhibition by Ryoji Ikeda, but also to catch some great work by Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, and Cy Twoombly. Tutor Richard Bisset, who took these pics, records his daily photography at blipfoto, and today's entry describes their visit.
