DMA 2019 Breakthrough Awards

8 December 2019

Congratulations to Ida Bukantyte and Marta Winogrodzka who were both shortlisted for the DMA Breakthrough Awards 2019. Both were given the opportunity pitch to the DMA panel and the client, Direct Line, in London, and then attend the awards event, alongside with the other  finalists, as well as the great and good from across the Marketing community in the UK.

Ida picked up the Silver award with her ‘Don’t Guess’ solution, and Marta secured Bronze for ‘That moment’. Another Star

11 June 2017

Final Year HND Graphic Design student Sarah Mary Macrae won the Star Creative Student category at the annual Marketing Society Scotland Awards, held last week in Glasgow at SWG3.

The Star Awards recognises the very best in Marketing across Scotland, and brings together the largest gathering of the marketing and advertising community outside of London.

DMA Awards 2016

11 December 2016

HND Graphic Design students Jennifer Grieve and Sam Haynes were in London last week, with tutor Helena Good, to attend the annual DMA Awards.

Jennifer and Sam were shortlisted in the DMA Breakthrough Award - which recognises emerging creative talent from the UK's Universities and Colleges. The pair picked up the runners' up spot and did some valuable networking, raising the profile of the course and doing Edinburgh College proud.

This is the second year in a row that we've had student work shortlisted at this national-recognised industry competition.  As well as attending the awards event, Sam and Jennifer presented their design solution at the Proximity Agency for the client (The Economist).

More about the Breakthrough award here, and a full list of DMA Award winners here.

Star Creative Again

13 June 2014

We are celebrating another piece of awards success, as HND student Andrew Palfreyman won the Star Creative Student at the annual Marketing Society Star Awards in Edinburgh last night.

This is the third consecutive win by our students in this particular award category. We had two shortlisted students, Andrew and fellow classmate Calum Mackinnon, who were competing against  students from Edinburgh College of Art, Duncan of Jordanstone and Napier University. This year the client was John Lewis, and Andrew can now look forward to an internship, working in-house with the John Lewis creative team.

Celebrating its tenth anniversary, and presented by Edith Bowman, the Star Awards this year brought together the largest gathering of the marketing and advertising community outside of London - some 500 practitioners, clients and creatives. The full list of winners can be found here.

Star Creative Student 2013

We are celebrating another piece of awards success today, as student Jonathan Walton won Star Creative Student at the annual Marketing Society Scotland Star Awards in Glasgow last night. This is the second consecutive win by a student from our course in this particular award.

Jonathan Walton receives his Star Creative Award from The Union's Dawn Kermani.

The full list of winners is now available to view on the Marketing Society's website. You can check our Jonathan's winning work here.

U In The Wild

31 May 2013

As part of our graduate show, One Night Stand, we exhibited HND student Jonathan Walton's engaging and impressive shortlisted entry for the Marketing Society's Star Creative Award. The brief, set by Scottish Natural Heritage, was a tricky one - to encourage 16-25 year old's to visit and responsibly use Scotland’s National Natural Reserves (NNRs). The tone needed to be fun, engaging, and inspirational, so Jonathan's concept was to spoof the youth-focused marketing used to promote outdoor music festivals (in this case T in the Park). Using a variety of channels, the campaign would encourage the target audience to enjoy a sensory festival of wildlife and landscape.

Sneak Peeks

24 May 2013

Today is the last Friday before our annual show - traditionally the busiest and most stressful day of the year in the studio! Thought it might be nice to post a sneak peek of some work to get everyone in the mood for One Night Stand, so here are two award-winning pieces.

Firstly, Katy Johnson's shortlisted entry to the Marketing Society's Star Creative Award 2013 - 'Visit & Exhibit' (client - Scottish Natural Heritage).

And secondly, Elan Tang's YCN Commendation - an animated advert for Experian, to encourage younger people to save and build up a credit rating.

Star Creative Shortlist

2 May 2013

This year's Marketing Society Scotland Star Awards shortlist have been announced, and two of our students, Jonathan Walton and Katy Johnson, have been selected in the Star Creative Student category.

There are 30 professional awards across five categories, and two student awards - Marketing Student and Star Creative, both open to a range of creative courses at Scotland's Universities and Art Schools.

The first round of the contest consists of a written submission to a set brief (supplied this year by Scottish Natural Heritage). Submissions are shortlisted to just six students, and they are then invited to present visuals to support their concept. We've had shortlisted entries for three consecutive years since being invited to participate in 2011 (including overall winner in 2012).

The Star Awards will take place on June 6th at the Old Fruitmarket, Glasgow.

Zoo Concepts

12 April 2013

Earlier this week our intrepid One Week Agency project reached completion as all four student teams pitched their concepts to the Marketing Team at Edinburgh Zoo. This post features a small sample of visuals from each pitch.

One of these ideas will be selected by the client and taken forward to the development stage.

Team RAPP - '#zooisland'. Mentor - Jen Wood.

Team Lewis - '#theworldinoneplace'. Mentor - Ian Kirkby.

Team IL - '#youradventureawaits'. Mentor - Iain Lauder.

Team Heedi - 'One(sie)'. Mentor - Veronica Ferguson.

Not Another Deadline...

27 March 2013

Hot on the heels of the recently passed D&AD deadline, this week sees the cut-toff for student entries to the Marketing Society's annual Star Awards.  Hopefully all of our final year students have submitted their entries (even though they are on holiday).

The first submission is a written brief, which is then shortlisted, and we should hear early-May if any of our students have made the shortlist this time around.

Our 2012 graduate Steven Brown won the Star Creative award last year, whilst 2011 graduate Ross Duncan took Silver the year before.

Banging the Degree Show DRUM

12 May 2012

It's always great to get good publicity for our course, and each year the DRUM includes a profile of our student work in its annual preview of degree shows.

This year Edinburgh's Telford is amongst seven institutions featured, the others being Glasgow School of Art, Grays, Duncan of Jordanstone, and from south of the border, the Universities of Leeds, Central Lancashire and Lincoln.

Check out the full article here.  A few copies of the print version of the magazine should be arriving in the studio shortly.

Star Creative Student Shortlist for Steven

5 March 2012

Great news today with the announcement that HND second year student Steven Brown has been shortlisted for the 'Star Creative Student of the Year' in the Marketing Society Awards 2012.

This prestigious award is open to Scotland's Universities and Art Schools, with Edinburgh's Telford College the only FE College invited to participate.

The first round of the contest consists of a written submission to a set brief. Submissions are then shortlisted to just six students, and they are then invited to present visuals to support their concept.

This year's brief was to devise a campaign aimed at 18-25 year olds for Red Stag by Jim Beam® - the finest Jim Beam 4 year old bourbon, infused with natural black cherry flavour.

Steven, who has spent the past month on work placements at Realise and HeeHaw Digital, will now be asked to present his idea at Maxxium House in Stirling on Tuesday 27th March.

We had two shortlisted students last year, Gill McColl and Ross Duncan (who eventually picked up the Silver Award).

Very well done and the best of luck to Steven for March 27th!

D&AD News

11 August 2011

Show and Tell YouTuibe Channel

As we prepare for the new session, we've been informed by D&AD that all University Network members will be receiving ten free entries to the Student Awards this coming year. The 2012 briefs will be rolling out during October and as usual will feature as part of the project delivery for HND 1 and 2.

Some other interesting news is that in collaboration with Google, D&AD recently launched Show and Tell, a YouTube channel where a selection of the latest creative marketing videos and campaign ads are available. Curated by D&AD, the channel showcases the best virals, home pages, interactive adverts and brand channels.

The idea is that D&AD invite producers and creatives across Europe to submit their latest work and showcase their talent. As the content grows, Show and Tell will include learning resources for creatives and students, along with case studies and analysis from leading producers and commentators. This will be a great resource for our classes during the 2012 session.
