Getting Festive

The last full week of term promises to be a busy one and will hopefully reflect our festive review theme for 2012 -



On Monday we are visiting Edinburgh zoo, to look at exhibition space and to discuss a possible live project for Semester Two.

Wednesday is our annual review night, held in the main college lecture theatre. This event is a celebration of design education, and gives our current final year students a chance to network with former graduates and mentors. We'll also have some excellent speakers, including stalwart mentor and all-round inspiring creative Ian Farmer, plus a special guest talk from James Jefferson, the founder and Creative Director of award-winning Glasgow-based digital agency Equator.

To promote the night we invited visitors to the blog to construct their own layout for our event poster. The plan was to choose the best one and use it, but we received so many versions (upwards of 60) that we've decided to use them all.

Finally, on Friday, the final year class will be presenting their 'Pure' editorial project. This is a collaborative project with HND Photography, and requires a cover, masthead and three articles, designed for iPad and built for Adobe's Digital Publishing Suite. We'll be posting a full gallery of the work online.

Banging the Drum for 2011 Show

With our 'Not Another Student Show' 2011 in the final stages of preparation, the HND Graphic Design course has been receiving some good press coverage.

The DRUM has again featured our students in its round-up of Degree Show previews - alongside Glasgow School of Art, Duncan of Jordanstone, University of Lincoln, and Grey’s School of Art.

We've also received some great press on the STV website - an article featuring quotes from D&AD InBook winners Abbie Macpherson and Jonny Paterson, both HND Graphic Design Year 1.

Design Splatters

Year 1 Graphic Design had some fun recently designing coverart for an upcoming band's debut CD.

The students set up a space in the college where they could create paint footprints and tracks on a large canvas, in response to music being played live by the band.

The resulting abstracts were then photographed and will be used as part of the CD cover design.

The event was organised by Ian Kirkby of Lewis Design.

Ross Takes Top prize

Congratulations to Year 1 HND student Ross Duncan, who scooped the first prize in the SQA-sponsored 'Show Racism the Red Card' competition.

The Awards took place at Hampden Park, Scotland's National Football Stadium, and was attended by hundreds of entrants from primary, secondary and further education.

Shortlist Exhibition:


Ross was shortlisted in the FE category for his 'Get to the Root Of It' poster, and on Thursday, myself and David Hiddleston accompanied Ross and his girlfriend Joanne on the trip through to Glasgow.

The event was MC'd by STV Sports broadcaster Raman Bhardwaj, and the prizes were awarded by a host of footballing legends, including Mark Hateley, Gary Mackay and former Scotland coach Craig Brown. The judges included members of the SQA, and Evening News cartoonist Frank Boyle, who currently has his own exhibition on at Hampden.

Ross received two tickets for the Scottish Cup Final, courtesy of Sky Sports. He'll spend the day as a VIP in the Media Centre during the big game, where he'll meet the commentators and get an insider look at broadcasting.

Ross also received a shirt signed by his team, Hibernian FC, an iPod Touch, and a £200 cheque which goes to the Design, Media and Computing Department.

The biggest prize however is going to be the exposure Ross' work gets - his poster will be used in Show Racism the Red Card's 2010 national campaign.

The Future of Publishing, by Penguin

This presentation by Dorling Kindersely/Penguin is about how publishing is changing as technology redefines what print and web communication is all about. It's also a great example of how powerful a clever bit of copy can be.

D&AD Update

After a very stressful few days last week, Graphic Design Year 2 finally all got their D&AD submissions sent, and you can check out some samples on the Awards link.

The D&AD website did have a few problems though, mostly to do with so many students from all over the UK uploading their digital work to the portfolio area at the same time. Because of this, as of Friday (19th) D&AD have extended the submission times by one week.

Sketchbook Talk

Helena Good has struck gold again, this time by tempting Telford graduate and YCN winner Gemma Rundell back to her old stomping ground to deliver a talk to the NC students. Gemma will be looking at research, concept development, sketchbook work, and the general approach designers need to take to interpreting briefs.

The talk will take place on Monday 17th Jan at 2pm in R310.
