D&AD Awards and New Blood 2012

Earlier this week, Helena and I attended the D&AD Student Awards Ceremony at Old Spitalfields Market in London, along with HND graduate Steven Brown. Steven was nominated for a Yellow Pencil in the Installation Design category. It was a great way for the Edinburgh's Telford Design Team to finish off another hugely successful year.

End of the Show

With the college merger due to come into force in October, this has been the last end-of-year show under the Edinburgh Telford name, and probably our most successful ever. So it was an emotional afternoon as the Class of 2012 turned up to take down and clean up their show at the Dovecot Studios.

The show generated lots of industry interest and was well attended across the four days. We also created a cracking promotional campaign, and presented our first Creative Investment Awards to various agencies. Most importantly, we showcased a superb collection of work by a group of very talented design prospects.

Katy's YCN commendation

One of the many highlights of our end-of-year show is that YCN announce their commendation winners during the same week.

The awards list for 2011/2012 appeared today, and one of our Graphic Design students, Katy Johnson, is amongst the winners. This is the sixth YCN Commendation in the past four years for our students.

Katy designed an outstanding response to the Marks & Spencer brief, packaging an M&S picnic for two. She has just finished the first year of her HND, and can now look forward a fantastic start to next year, with a trip to London in September to the YCN Awards Ceremony. Her work will also be showcased in the 2012 edition of the YCN Student Awards Annual.

Showtime 2012

Re:Create

Graduating student Steven Brown's Re:Create project - a dedicated social media portal for creatives, mentors and industry specialists - is due to launch soon. Steven devised the idea during his HNC year, and continued to developed it into its current form as his final project, for which he received an A+ grade.



Steven will be introducing Re:Create at our end-of-year Show this coming week at the Dovecot Studios. You can register your interest at www.re-create.com

Creativity is Liquid

3D animation isn't a regular feature on welovedesign, but Dave MacGruer's final project - an advert for the Hewlett Packard D&AD brief - is an outstanding piece of creative work and well worth checking out. Dave's ad was made using 3DS Max with the RealFlow plugin, and his own script and score.

Virtue in BranD Magazine

BranD is a bimonthly English-language magazine, published in Hong Kong and distributed internationally, which showcases creative branding from around the world. Each issue features one hundred contemporary designers working in Brand Design.

The current issue, which focusses on brands that expand the values and public image around irresistible desires (like sex,food and comfort), contains design work from our very own Jody Hogg (HND Year 1). BranD loved Jody's brand idea to launch a new whisky to an international female target audience - and we love it too.

@ the Great Big Art Show

The Great Big Art Show is currently running in the Hub at Edinburgh's Telford College and features work from HNDs in Contemporary Art Practice and Illustration, alongside HNC and NC Graphics and Photography, and First Diploma Art through to National and Foundation.

Last night was the Private View event, and our NC Graphics students were pleased to be a part of it all, with their personal project work on display - their first ever exhibited work.

Education Network Portfolio

Just updated our Inspiration Portfolio at D&AD, with a great selection of work from this year's HND graduates. Some of this stuff will be exhibited at our end-of-year show at the Dovecot next week. In the meantime, enjoy the sneak preview.

Pitching to the Federation

Final Year HND students Terry Smith and Viktorija Kravcova recently pitched to the Scottish Museums Federation. The Federation, established in the 1930s, has members throughout Scotland from local authorities, universities, national and independent museums and galleries.

Both students had taken on the live brief - to reinvent the Federation's branding and digital presence - for their final project. You can catch all their brilliant work as part of the SHOW Exhibition next week at the Dovecot.

NC Presentations

Well done to all our NC students who presented their personal projects today in the studio. All the presentations consisted of a mixture of mounted boards and digital visuals. David and Helena sat in on every pitch - all 24 of them. Unfortunately I only made it along to see a few of them, but its clear that the standard this year is as high as we can ever remember it.





The finished NC work will be on show next week in the Hub, alongside HND Year 1 Graphics, plus lots of amazing art and design from the Fine Art courses.
