National Galleries One Week

6 June 2016

As part of our annual end-of-year event at the Fruitmarket Gallery on 9th June, we'll be exhibiting our most recent One Week project, where our students took on a live brief from the National Galleries of Scotland, in collaboration with their mentors in design agencies Whitespace, Multiply, Realise, Teviot, and Blonde. Check out our short film of the project -

Part of the Edinburgh College Glow Festival, 'A Brief Student Show' is on at the Fruitmarket Gallery in Edinburgh, June 9th from 6-9PM.  If you are planning to come along but haven't let us know yet, you can register at www.etcshow.net

Moving Week

29 May 2016

This is 'moving week' - the last college week before our end-of-year show. Our final year students will be busy tweaking their Graded Unit projects and preparing them to go to print. Once all the projects are finalised, samples will be posted to our pinterest boards. The range of work this year is really eclectic and features print and digital work across editorial design, mobile, web, corporate identity, advertising, exhibitions, digital publishing, packaging and book design.

Edinburgh Copyshop are producing our A0 boards for the show, and also the collateral for the show campaign  - 'A Brief Student Show' - designed by 2015 graduate Simon Griffiths, from blueroom collective.

G.F. Smith are again sponsoring the show by supplying the paper for our invites (including their fabulous Munken Kristall Smooth 120gsm envelopes). The invite mailshot goes out this week to more than 60 agencies, studios and organisations in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

In / Out

27 May 2016

We love topical projects. This one by HNC student Liam Phillp, for his Graded Unit, deals with the EU Referendum. The brief - In/Out - was to present an alternative to the recent Government publication outlining why we should vote Remain on June 23rd.

Liam's concept is 'the breakup', and blends an ironic play on personal relationships with crisp editorial design and a fresh typographic approach.  It's surprisingly informative, and far more memorable than any of the official information that's currently out there.

TES FE Awards

14 May 2016

We were in London recently at the TES FE Awards, where our HND course gained a nomination for the Partnership Initiative in the Employer Engagement category. The awards celebrate dedication and expertise in the Further Education provision across the whole of the UK.

Curriculum Manager Neil Manning accompanied the design tutors to the event, held at London's Grosvenor Hotel, along with two of our Mentors, Kirsten Murray and Kat Summers, both from Teviot Creative.  A full list of nominations, winners and the official photo gallery are available at the TES website http://www.tesfeawards.co.uk

Showtime

11 May 2016

It's nearly that time of year again. Our design students are midway through their final projects, and the graduating class are gearing up for the annual Industry Night & Show on June 9th. For the second year running, we'll be exhibiting at the prestigious Fruitmarket Gallery in Edinburgh. The event is part of the 'Glow Festival' - a month-long celebration across Edinburgh College featuring a number of exhibitions, show nights and events at venues around the city.

This year our one-night event, entitled 'A Brief Student Show', will feature brilliant graphic design work from our Class of 2016, plus video and design work from our Partnership and mentoring projects, and winning competition work. As usual, there will be refreshments, a great DJ, and upwards of 200 designers, educators, employers and graduates past and present to network with.

To let us know if you can attend the show, go to www.etcshow.net and follow the brief. We'll be posting out print invites (sponsored by G.F Smith) to agencies and individuals once our list is complete.

Mentor Evening Buzz

25 April 2016

Some photos from the last mentoring evening of the 2015-16 session.  This event allowed our final year students to run their major project ideas past their mentors, and to talk about their whole experience of the course and their thoughts for the future.

Mentor Dan Haythorne, a Senior Designer at Teviot, came into the mentoring programme this year as part of our Partnership Initiative, and had this to say about the evening -

"It was wonderful to see and feel so much energy and passion buzzing around the place and I was particularly impressed with the guys who presented what the course had given them. The humour, delivery and analogies showed great ability to engage with an audience – a crucial skill for their futures."

The final project deadline is the last week in May, and our annual Industry Night and Show takes place on June 9th at the Fruitmarket Gallery.   We'll be announcing further details of the show in the next week or so.
